Week 38 — 8 WhatsApp taps in 15 months. Then 80 in one.

A dental group's old website got 8 WhatsApp taps in 15 months. The new one got 80 in August alone. Here's what changed, plus a KK nightlife guide and a hacked site cleaned up.

Every Sunday I post my week here: what got built, what broke, and what you can take from it. Pictures first. Two minutes. Scroll.

Wins

Built this week — and what it does

One result I can finally prove, and one guide people actually search for.

1 · A website that turned into WhatsApp messages

Old site · 15 months 8 taps New site · August 80 taps 1–17 Sep: 75 taps already

Every tap on the WhatsApp button is a patient starting a conversation. For six weeks, I counted them.

Before
A slow site, heavy pictures, and a WhatsApp button almost nobody found.
Now
49 pages rebuilt. Pictures cut from 54 MB to 4.5 MB. The button is on every screen.
Measuring
Taps per month. 80 in August, 75 in the first 17 days of September.

For you: do you know how many people tapped your WhatsApp button last month? If not, that's the first thing to set up. Want it tracked? WhatsApp me →

2 · A KK nightlife guide that’s checked, not copied

The KK nightlife guide

Tap to open the guide.

"Where to go out in KK" gets searched every weekend. The answers online were old lists of places that had closed.

Before
No proper nightlife page on SabahGuide.
Now
395 venues, 286 real photos, a page for every area. A wrong number got caught before launch.
Measuring
Google visits to the nightlife pages, counted from launch.

For you: run a bar or a KTV in KK? Check your listing and tell me if anything's wrong.

What broke, and how I fixed it

"free" plugin hidden backdoor removed, keys changed
A "free" plugin with a backdoor
BrokeA client site had a pirated plugin. It carried a hidden backdoor, and an old payment add-on was keeping card details it shouldn't.
FixRemoved both, changed every password and key, and cleaned the site the same day.
Do thisIf your site has a paid plugin you didn't pay for, delete it today.
Tap to call a Sabah clinic Johor
Calling the wrong state
BrokeOn a clinic group's site, 20 "tap to call" links were wrong. One Sabah branch was dialling a number in Johor.
FixChecked every link against the branch list and fixed all 20.
Do thisTap every phone and WhatsApp link on your own site, on your phone. Today.
8/30 wrong numbers, caught before launch
An AI receptionist with old numbers
BrokeI built a clinic chain's AI receptionist from a spreadsheet. 8 of 30 branch numbers in it were out of date.
FixRebuilt it from the clinic's own live website instead. Caught before any patient saw it.
Do thisYour website is your one true list. Feed tools from it, not from old spreadsheets.

Show the full weekEverything else from the week, in six lines.
  • For clients: a state agency's site got its own AI assistant (40 of 40 test questions right) and its first invoice went out.
  • For more clients: an event site's mobile header made smaller, a supply base got 47 photo albums, and one dental clinic's ads brought in 73 enquiries in two weeks.
  • For new business: a children's centre came in by itself; proposal and quote sent.
  • For SabahGuide: issue #12 went out, shared in three Facebook groups.
  • For Bingo: the free audit tool went live on Sunday night, and 52 client sites on my dashboard, none disconnected (21 had dropped off).
  • For the AI receptionist: built a clinic chain's assistant and its demo page.

Other tools this week: Zoho Books, MainWP, Cloudflare, Wordfence, Meta Business Suite, Billplz.

If you do one thing this week

Ask your web person: "How many people tapped our WhatsApp button last month?"

If nobody knows, you're guessing whether your website works. One of my clients went from 8 to 80 once we started counting.

That’s my week. How was yours? Tell me on LinkedIn or in the comments on Substack. Next one lands next Sunday.
